There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to Detroit especially for those outside of the region – and even for some who live here. Having worked in Detroit my entire life, with the exception of a few years, I have been able to witness the ups and downs of this wonderful city. And to be completely honest, there’s nowhere else I’d rather work.
Here are a couple of my observations about working in Detroit:

Murphy-Telegraph Building, where MCCI is located
- Detroit IS safe. I have never encountered any safety challenges while in the city and very rarely have I felt uncomfortable. Just like in any other city or town, you must be conscious of your surroundings.
- There ARE fun things to do in Detroit. Foodies unite! Detroit is on the culinary map today more than ever before. Trendy eateries and bars are popping up all over the city and the appetite for more is very real. At the center of downtown’s action is Campus Martius, and in the summer it features a “beach bar” and regular live entertainment, which has become more than just a place for Detroit professionals to take their lunch breaks.
- Detroit DOES offer job opportunities. Judging by the incredible amount of business investment, building renovations, new construction and entertainment activities in the city, jobs are becoming more widely available. Personally, I believe that everyone should work downtown at one point in their lives. If you don’t, you’re missing out!
Above all, Detroit is home to a sub-culture of people who are dedicated to living, working and improving the city. This makes for an environment that is truly inspiring. I invite you to join me (and MCCI) in being a part of Detroit’s transformation.
